Assessment Details:
A CLASS TEST length .75 HOURS weighted at 50%. An ASSIGMT weighted at 50%.
A class-test 45 minutes weighted at 50% which will assess Learnings Outcomes 1 and 3. The test will be machines based and take place in normal class hours.
An assignment weighted at 50% which will assess Learning Outcomes 2 and 4.
Indicative Content:
Distributed database design: Entity models, relational design, mapping designs to implementations, normalisation and de-normalisation.
Database languages
SQL: DML, DDL and DCL
Developing applications with database tools
Database system architecture - relational, network, hierarchical, object orientated.
Database security, reliability, integrity and concurrency control.
Database administration: functions of database administration, organisational issues.
Introduction to ASP.
Internet based Database connectivity.
XML and related database technologies.
Multimedia databases.
Learning Strategies:
The module aims to allow you to work in your own time at your own pace, with lecturers being available during the two set tutorial/practical sessions each week to offer assistance where required. Extensive use is made of the technique of learning via problem solving with each student having their own database account. The course relies heavily on prescribed reading with lectures supporting you in difficult areas. You will be able to identify the extent and type of help you require from these sessions by active learning self assessments which will be provided as an integral part of the module. There will be 24 lectures and 24 tutorial/practical sessions, the latter normally delivered to groups of 20 students per tutor. (1:n)2 (1:20)2
